Koru People
We believe in good people.
Koru People is a collective of exceptional individuals and businesses we know personally and trust deeply enough to recommend. Most importantly, each of them embodies the belief that a rising tide lifts all boats—they share an innate desire to collaborate, uplift, and support others.
As you explore Koru Expeditions, we invite you to also discover Our People.
Please note: we have no financial affiliation with, nor do we receive any compensation from, any of the people or companies listed here. We simply believe that the world is a better place when good people connect!
BoatHowTo - Nigel Calder + Dr. Jan Athenstädt
Nigel and Jan have reputations that speak for themselves! Their newest endeavor, BoatHowTo, allows them to scale their vast experience to reach countless sailors through online, self-paced classes—often leaving them more knowledgeable than many so-called “experts.” And beyond their expertise, they’re simply incredible human beings with a passion for helping others grow their knowledge, skills and confidence with solving both common and uncommon technical challenges aboard their vessels.
Sailing Zingaro | Be The Captain - James Evenson
Far more than an “influencer,” our friend James brings an incredible breadth of experience, a generous spirit, and a personal mission to share sailing knowledge with as many people as possible. Two of the main ways he does this are through his YouTube channel and his new book, Be the Captain—both of which are absolutely fantastic resources for sailors of all levels. We’ve learned tons from him and know you will too!

Mahina Offshore Services - John Neal
Our dear friend and mentor John Neal founded Mahina Offshore Services in 1976 following the publication of his first book, Log of the Mahina, which chronicled his sailing adventures throughout the South Pacific. The book sparked a series of offshore cruising seminars, boat-selection consultations, and, beginning in the 1990s, offshore sail-training expeditions.
After 410,000 nautical miles and 38 training-expedition seasons, John concluded his offshore sail-training programs in 2025. Lucky for all, he continues to share his deep expertise through seminars and Boat Selection Consultation services, offering cruisers detailed analysis of vessels they’re considering—including design implications, construction quality, seaworthiness, safety, performance, and comfort.

We love how they prioritize humble leadership, foster a culture of positive camaraderie, and create a safe, joyful environment for learning under sail. Their Morning Muster podcast is also packed with fantastic insights and stories.
